Japanese restaurant Susuru Juju hopes to open in Orlando in early 2022

ORLANDO, Florida. – The owners of Susuru Juju hope to have the Orlando Milk District site fully renovated and ready for operation by February 2022.

The restaurant opens in a former Pizza Hut at 700 Maguire Blvd., directly across from Fashion Square Mall.

The company said construction of the restaurant recently ran into a problem when the building was broken into. However, the company said the remodeling is now on track.

“Framing is complete and drywall is in place. Construction is expected to be complete by February 2022,” a representative said in an email to News 6.

However, they added that there were still permits needed for the city to complete the facade modifications.

“Since we are transforming the Pizza Hut building into a Shōwa-style Japanese house with joined wooden frames, we are still waiting for the city permit for the exterior refacing. We’re so excited and can’t wait to show Orlando Susuru Juju once it’s finished!

Susuru chef and owner Lewis Lin first announced plans to open the Japanese yakitori restaurant’s flagship location in July.

Susuru’s first location is at 8548 Palm Parkway near Disney World. The restaurant bills itself as a “retro-themed izakaya (casual Japanese bar) serving Japanese tapas-style dishes, charcoal-grilled skewers (yakitori) with craft beers and cocktails,” according to its Facebook page.

The Showa theme refers to an era in Japan that spanned from before World War II to the late 1980s, which saw an explosion of Japanese pop culture that also made its way to the United States – as Godzilla, Ultraman, Gundam and Power Rangers.

The JuJu in the name of the new restaurant refers to Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound produced by grilled meats, according to a press release.

The company said Susuru’s third birthday was approaching and it was planning a celebratory event in late December or early January, though it didn’t provide any details.
